Popular Mechanics Photo Shoot At NIMBY

Popular Mechanics wrote a feature article in this September’s issue on DIY projects.

Backyard Geniuses: 10 Incredibly Cool DIY Projects

The top prize winner was none other than Christian Ristow’s Hand of Man.

The Hand of Man is an epic piece that spent the summer residing at NIMBY.  In the photo below it was set up in our 30,000 square foot yard for the photo shoot for this article.  Seen this summer at both Maker Faire and The Crucible’s Fire Arts Festival this piece is a huge favorite of ours.  How lucky are we to have had a private opportunity to play with this great piece?

The animatronic piece is controlled by a user perched up-high behind the sculpture.  The user wears a glove controlling the hydraulic motion of the giant hand.  The Hand of Man is strong enough to crush cars and anything else put in its way.  At shows audience members are able to take a turn picking up, dropping and crushing giant objects.  Just the kind of thing we like to see in our yard here at NIMBY.
